How to submit patches to fix typos in Dictionaries

Post by epement »

Hello Tim,

From time to time, I come across a typographical error in a Dictionary or Commentary, which I am capable of fixing. For example, I ran across this one today.

To reduce the burden on you, is there a "diff/patch" format that could allow users like me to submit changes for your review, which could then be applied to the source files for dictionaries and commentaries?

I am thinking of the traditional diff and patch utilities in Unix and Linux. (See explanation here and also here.)

I already know that the native format is an SQLite database and I know how to modify the database, so plain-text diff files are not viable without some type of intermediate tool. Still, in principle it should be possible to use a plain text patch file to identify an offending location, confirm the text to locate, and view the text which will replace it, all in a human-readable text file.

Considering the widespread use of SQLite, I'm sure that something like this has been done already, so you may not need to re-invent the wheel, but merely find a repository where pre-aligned wheels are being given away.

Is this of interest to you?

Kind regards,
Eric Pement

I don't have any special diff tools ready, but if you fix some mistakes in the SQLite file, just export the whole title when finished to a text file (html), one verse/topic/chapter per line and send it along. It is easy to run a compare (even with Notepad++) and check all the changes. I can then recompile and upload it to the server.
