"Enter Word or Reference" section on the top ribbon next to the Master Control Panel

Hello,
I'm a "newbie" and am trying to understand the workings of the system - version 5. This "Enter Word or Reference" box as mentioned above is a mystery to me. I enter either a word or a reference and nothing happens. It's as though the entry is just ignored by the entire system.
I imagine that it's not just for information purposes, or some such. I guess that an entry would evoke some sort of useful system response.
