Mac OS X Edition Beta (Updated 4.5.3.10) 4-16-12

Post by Tim »

Mac Edition Now Ready To Test

After several weeks of development, our OS X edition of Bible Analyzer is available for beta testing. It is a fully native Mac app and does not need any emulator or "Crossover" type software installed to operate. It has essentially all the features and capabilities of the Windows edition. Including,
  • Text-To Speech
Auto scrolling of the BIble Window with TTS and Audio Bible (Scourby, etc.)
Playing of Audio (Midi/Mp3 Hymns, etc.)
Plus all searching, statistical, word list, etc. functions
Details of the Mac App

The Bible Analyzer OS X app was developed on a Mac Mini (2009) with OS X 10.5, a dual core Intel processor, and 4MB of ram. The resulting app theoretically should run on any installation of 10.5+ with an Intel or PowerPC processor with at least 1MB of ram. It also is very likely to run on a 10.3 and 10.4 OS X installation, but this is yet to be determined.

The Bible Analyzer 4 package is placed in a Package File (.PKG). This is necessary rather than simply placing the application bundle in a DMG because the modules must be installed in the proper folders and a PKG setup file can do that.

File Arrangement

Upon installation when running the Bible Analyzer 4 beta package, the files are installed as such,

The Bible Analyzer app itself is placed in the normal
/Applications folder
The Modules and quotes.txt file are placed in the
/Library/Application Support/Bible Analyzer and
/Library/Application Support/Bible Analyzer/Modules folders
All user files (configuration, layout, etc.) are placed upon first run in the
/USER/Library/Application Support/Bible Analyzer folder A
/USER/Library/Application Support/Bible Analyzer/Modules folder is also created for user made modules.

Testing and Reporting of Issues

Anyone can download and test the beta edition. We ask that you use this forum for the reporting of any issues, problems, and suggestions to lessen the possibility of several testers reporting the same issue.

The built in error reporter will usually display when an internal crash occurs. We highly encourage that these be sent to us when they occur with an explanation of what events lead up to the crash. These help us greatly. Just sending it a couple times or so for each type of error is sufficient. We will correct the issue and upload a new beta as soon as we can.

Please report the OS X version you are using.

The Appearance of the Mac edition is somewhat different than the Windows edition. Especially around buttons and such. We resized many of these components to look better in the Mac OS, but I'm sure we missed some. Just post the ones that need modified.

The User Manual is included. Press F1 key to access.

Modules for Mac

We do not currently have any modules (other than those in the app DMG) setup in Mac packages or DMGs. The modules are the same between all three platforms (Windows/Linux/Mac), just the method of installation is different. Thus if you already have some modules in a Windows installation of Bible Analyzer, they can be copied to the Mac installation.

Hopefully, this weekend we will have some of the modules in Mac packages.

Thank you for providing a Mac version of Bible Analyzer. First of all, I'd like to know if the current beta is supposed to run under Mac OS Lion. I am unable to perform even the simplest search (Bible Analyzer Error Report pops up). Neither the Context menu Search option nor the Master Control Panel (Advanced Search) work for me.

I believe the searching issue is resolved. Download the new beta and check. It is the same link as above in the initial post.

When trying to quit the program, I cannot within the program (both options upper left menu) because I get another screen, titled "Verses from references". I have to quit by the Dock.

Oh no, I cannot even quit by the Dock. I have to use force quit.
I have tried to make a screenshot, this does not work.

We have update to 4.5.1.103 fixing several issues including,
  • Added User Manual (will open in browser)
Fixed closing issue described in post below
Fixed image in Message Toolbar and ScripturePad icon
Fixed display of dialogs, MultiWindow and other pages
Fixed Parallel Generator loading files issue
    Several other minor fixes
Go to the initial post to download. The download is now a .pkg file instead of a .dmg. Apple seems to prefer the PKG file format now. Although it may not run on versions earlier than 10.5. Let me know.
